Bird count tally
A count sheet for the window or the garden bench: add each species, tap to count, note when you started and stopped. It stays on this device until you clear it.
No birds yet: add a species or tap a suggestion.
How to use the sheet
Press Now under Start when you begin, add each new species as it turns up and tap + for every bird, then press Now under End. Type a number straight into a count for a flock. The sheet saves itself in this browser as you go, so you can close the tab and come back. Download a CSV for a spreadsheet, or print it.
Where to send your counts
Each survey has its own rules, so read them before you count. eBird, run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, takes checklists from anywhere at any time. The Great Backyard Bird Count runs over four days each February: watch for 15 minutes or more and enter your birds through eBird or the Merlin app. In the UK, the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch asks for one hour once a year, counting only birds that land. This sheet doesn’t send anything anywhere: you enter the numbers on their sites yourself.
Questions
Where is my sheet stored?
Only in this browser’s local storage on this device. Nothing is uploaded. Clearing the sheet, or your browser’s site data, deletes it, so download a CSV if you want to keep a copy.
Can I import the CSV into eBird?
Not directly: eBird’s import needs its own format. The CSV is for your records and spreadsheets; enter the counts on eBird’s website or app.
